Electrocution

Electric shock occurs upon contact of a (human) body with any source of electricity that causes a sufficient current through the skin, muscles or hair.  Well, it’s a good thing I cut off all my hair last week, because it would probably be standing up right now.

Have you ever had a “near miss” situation happen to you?  At first you were in shock, then took a deep breath and laughed it off. A few minutes later you stop and think, “what are the chances I could have died?”  I experienced that moment today.

Danger Electric Shock Risk. Sign

It was cold in that room….  The air was thick with dust, making it difficult to see….  A feeling of fear was present, as my spine begin to tingle.  I’m kidding.  I was really just doing some demolition that included cutting and pulling out wires from the walls, lots of wires.  Little did I know that one of those wires was a hot one, still plugged in, and flowing with plenty of electricity!  The clippers I used were very sharp and cut through wires like butter.  So let me explain what I saw within that second.  As I cut I heard a loud POP, saw a big blue flash, and went blind for about a half a second; followed with a “WOW” by the other guy in the room.  A few minutes later I found the clippers laying under a bunch of rubble, which I don’t remember leaving from my hands.  After making sure I was still alive, we all just kind of laughed it off, and got back to work.  But a little later, I couldn’t help but think, what are the chances I could have seriously been hurt or killed from that. So I looked up some statistics.

Each year, there are 500 deaths from electrocution (notsoboringlife.com), meaning there is about a 1 in 10,000 chance you can die from electrocution.  This makes me feel a little better.  However, that is still a lot of deaths from electrocution.  People, please be careful the next time you are changing your light bulbs.

  • As your friendly, neighborhood electric utility spokesperson, time for a PSA … Please turn off the electricity at the breaker and then test all plugs and fixtures before starting any home demo project. Before digging in your yard call FL Sunshine One Call 1-800-432-4770 so all utilities can mark your property and help keep you from cutting a line. Also, when moving ladders or other equipment outside, look up. Make sure the area is clear of power lines. Safety first!
