Swamp Party!

It’s funny, but with all our focus on social media, much of it really is an isolated experience.   Sure, the networking potential is limitless, and social media platforms do create an enormous power in their own right with a trade of information and ideas, but there’s also something to be said for the flux of communal energy generated by a true social gathering.  Witness last night’s premier of Swamp Men on National Geo Wild.

Park Director Ed Woods with "gator lock" on Exec. Producer Guy Nickerson

Spectrum Video Productions President and Executive Producer Guy Nickerson threw a great premier party with a real-time screening of the broadcast at Channelside Cinema’s Dolce Vita Lounge.

Of course, it was terrific watching the critters and characters from Billie Swamp Safari up on the giant wide screen.  However, almost as entertaining was the opportunity to observe and gauge all the spontaneous, genuine reactions of attendees. Thanks to the quick camerawork of my friend Johnathan Safford, we’ve got pictures that convey some of the group vibe.

There were the knowing laughs and shared reactions of the “Swamp Men” stars themselves.  Imagine having some of the coolest jobs around and finally having a way to fully share that experience with others!

Then there were the priceless reactions of the show’s creators – the producers, photographers, artists and creative staff who put their all into telling great stories – all showing the rewards of hard effort as viewers react and comment at just the right moments.

For those of you reading this who weren’t at the event, you’ll just have to trust me – the theater was filled with amazing energy.  And for those who were there – Congratulations to all involved for creating a great shared moment.  Forgive me if this humble post doesn’t do it justice!

  • Good writeup Gary. For everyone else, there are some more pics up on Mindclay's Facebook Page:

As far as your intro paragraph, that's why there's a difference between Social Media, which are channels through which people and brands may socialize, and Social Networking, which is what you do not only through those channels, but in "real" scenarios as well.

Last night was a great opportunity to do some Social Networking, which I hope to perpetuate through Social Media (I already added a few folks from last night to Facebook! Ha!)

  • Good point on the distinction… especially when people remember that the networking doesn't just end at their computers and handhelds!

  • Alex, agreed! My last blog post hits on that idea of "Social Networking" whether it be online or offline. Gary creates a great energy around the event on this post and reminds us of how important it is for us not to isolate ourselves from the true essence of being human – socializing!
